I built an experiment where people donate with no cause, no reward, and a global ranking
The project is called “Donate Without Reason or Need” and the idea is to treat giving itself as the subject of the experiment.
Main concept:
- no campaign target
- no personal benefit
- no traditional fundraising story
- public ranking by people and by country
So the platform is basically asking:
can the act of giving spread culturally even when detached from utility?
It’s partly inspired by gift theory and the idea that public giving can create symbolic value, imitation, and discussion.
If you test it:
- please use PayPal
- the exact donation amount goes in “Enter custom amount”
I’d be interested in feedback on:
- whether the concept is compelling or absurd
- whether the ranking makes it more interesting or less
- whether this feels like art, product, experiment, or all three
