Bioshock 2 review. I just beat Ryan's Amusements level, have I judged the game too early or can I expect more of what I describe?
We all already know the technical aspect is straight up bad, but at least it seems to be patchable by mods.
What mods can't fix is the game itself. It's just not that good, even worse if compared to its predecessor. I'm playing it on the highest difficulty and I'm one shotting everyone with ease, and yet I don't actually even feel like I'm a big daddy because I lose just about all my HP from 2 pistol shots. That doesn't really matter, as resources such as HP, Eve, and Ammo are overtly abundant, easily accessible since I have to spend so little cash that littered throughout the levels. Did a rich douchebag slip on a banana peel over and over?
The common enemies are a repeat from 1, and the big bad daddys and big sisters are far less of a threat than Bioshock 1. Collecting Adam, a rare resource, is not fun. Subjective, sure, but noteworthy, as I feel I'm playing the worst parts of Bioshock 1 again.
The story is not interesting, or even good. It forcefully tries (and fails) to present itself like it was always relevant from the first game. The atmosphere feels like when a classmate copies your homework but they do it worse, just slapping the same beats from the first game but doesn't land any of it. When the doctor splicer showed up behind me in Bioshock 1, it actually scared the fuck out of me. In two, I just turned around and shot the splicer in the head, looted her, and moved on.
Even the hacking system has become a simple button press, and I quickly lost any sense of reward or accomplishment, not just because of how easy it is, but because I can't even really get anything out of it because my inventory is already maxed out or I don't really need machines to help me beat this stupidly easy game.
An inhonorable mention for the distinct lack of any organisms when looked out from large windows most of the time.
What a let down of a sequel, it's clearly just a cash cow rushjob. I would rather play Bioshock 1 again, which I had just been doing before I moved onto 2. Now I remember why I could not remember having beat Bioshock 2 before; it's not worth remembering.
