Looking at Dubai’s transformation, I’m not convinced Singapore’s leaders did something uniquely “exceptional”.

A state with strong control over land, planning, labour flows, and capital can absolutely engineer rapid growth and a shiny skyline. Dubai did it in about two decades. So the question is not whether rapid development is possible. Of course it is.

The real question is: **who actually benefits, and who gets protected?**

That’s where the comparison becomes uncomfortable. In Dubai, citizens are clearly treated as a protected class. In Singapore, locals are constantly told to adapt, compete harder, accept higher housing costs, accept wage pressure, and treat every squeeze as “just reality”.

So maybe this was never about some once-in-history leadership genius. Maybe it was just a standard growth model: import labour, attract capital, build aggressively, keep the machine moving.

The difference is that the Emiratis seem to understand that the state should ultimately work for its own people first. Here, Singaporeans are too often treated like inputs in the system rather than the people the system is supposed to serve.

That’s why I don’t buy the “exceptional leadership” narrative anymore. The skyline is not the achievement. Protecting your own citizens is.

Agree or not?

Dubai did in 20 years what Singaporeans call “exceptional leadership” — the difference is Emiratis are better protected than locals here
