How can i leave without hurting my parents?
I'm a 4th-year college student, born and raised in the INC. After years of internal struggle, I've finally made the decision that I can no longer continue attending this cult. It's something I've thought about deeply, and it's affecting my mental health to the point where I'm really depressed and burnt out.
I told my mom I just want to attend worship once a week somewhere else. She was hesitant but eventually said okay. My dad, however, is completely against it, and I understand why. Both of my parents hold positions in the church. If I leave, they risk losing those roles. That guilt is killing me.
I don't want to hurt them. I love them. But I also can't keep living like this.
To those of you who have been through this, especially those who left while still living with your parents or while they were still active in the church, did things eventually get better with your family? How do you carry the guilt of knowing your choice affects their standing in the church?
Any advice, experience, or even just words of comfort would mean a lot right now.
