Why are people surprised by traditional Arabic clothing when it resembles how Jesus is depicted?

I’ve noticed something that I’m genuinely curious about.

In many parts of Europe and the U.S., people sometimes seem surprised, or at least do a double take, when they see someone wearing traditional Arabic men’s clothing like a thobe (also called dishdasha in Arabic , the white robe)

What I find interesting is that in most biblical stories, artwork, and movies, Jesus Christ is typically depicted wearing a long robe that looks very similar in style—loose, ankle-length, simple, and suited for a hot climate.

So my question is: why does this style of clothing feel “unusual” or “foreign” to many people today, when it’s so closely associated with one of the most widely recognized religious figures in Western culture?
