Five hours in

I decided to give this game a try. I am five hours in so far, it is different but I like it. I would appreciate any advice I can get, so far I am liking spears. I have a two handed hammer but cannot equip it for some reason. Any tips on combat, things to look for, good weapons I can find, would be greatly appreciated.
