Alone in the Japanese Countryside

Hello all! Hope everyone’s doing well.

I recently booked a last-minute solo trip to Japan this coming June. I’m aware it’s the start of the rainy season and that summer can get quite humid, but I’m from Malaysia… so honestly, that’s nothing new for me.

This will be my fourth time in Japan, so I’m skipping the usual big cities and must-dos (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka). This trip is more about slowing down and getting away from everything.

I’m planning a quiet, countryside-focused trip — renting a car, staying in a farmhouse or cabin, and just taking things easy. Think village hopping, long walks, light hikes, cycling, maybe the occasional temple — nothing too structured, just living simply for a couple of weeks.

Current plan:

• 1 night in Tokyo on arrival

• 5–6 days in Nagano (currently deciding between Ōshika and Nakagawa)

• 5–6 days somewhere else (this is where I’m stuck)

• Final 2 nights back in Tokyo before flying home

I’ve previously been to Gifu Prefecture (Takayama, Shirakawa-go), so I’m looking to explore somewhere different this time. I’m leaning more towards central to northern regions — somewhere quieter, less touristy, and ideally with beautiful rural landscapes that are best explored by car.

Would really appreciate any recommendations for:

• quiet countryside areas or villages that’s accessible. Perhaps with a small nearby town.

• regions that are particularly nice in early June

• places that work well as a base for slow travel (not just quick sightseeing)

Thank you!
