Ozwell vs Oswell Spencer
Potentially a spoiler, maybe? Or at least for those who have not finished Requiem? Tried to play it safe....
so, maybe I'm overlooking something, or I missed something in the games I haven't (yet) played.
but was Oswell E. Spencer the original name?
yet Victor Gideon (who, from what Sherry tells us, was a T-Virus researcher) spells it wrong.
Now, it could be Victor isn't a great writer, and sounded out the name phonetically... but he's FANATICAL about his "Master".
if I remember the lore recaps, etc., correctly, Umbrella had moles to the Family / Connections / myster-group-number-A that they never pinpointed.
so, here's my snowball's-chance-in-hell speculation.
Victor Gideon *was* the mole. They got him moved outside of RC before the Arklay incidents. How? At the command of "Ozwell" Spencer ... possibly a Connections clone (ala Zeno) of Oswell that DID NOT accomplish the desired goals, and they kept him off radar. Manipulating Victor would quite possibly have been absolutely easy, if, in his fanaticism, he thought it was the real Spencer. However, Victor didn't know enough, and wasn't CLOSE enough, so they kept him as a back-pocket, here-if-we-need it. And throughout the years between RE0 and Requiem, they learned of ARK, established control etc. that we see in Requiem... and made Victor, who was intelligent enough to work on T-Virus research, try to figure out things via "Ozwell", his "master".
I don't know if Gideon ever MET Oswell. It wasn't quite clear to me. But it's plausible.
All speculation, but ....
...Gideon was at least relatively intelligent AND otherwise his files that you acquire are otherwise not misspelled, etc. - so why the name? Especially from a researcher and devoted Umbrella employee? he would know how to spell it.
Or it's a "Capcom special" of a retcon, and I'm just spitballing for future games off a single letter change... but to be fair, most of the changes they did with remakes serve some purpose.. minus inexplicably removing portions or changing them up drastically.
