Why didn't the first shootout "goal" by the torrent count?

Very new hockey fan, so this is a sincere question. During the shootout tonight at the MSG game (4/4) it looked like when the torrent took their first shot, the puck crossed the goal line completely, but it didn't count as a goal. Can someone please explain why? This is going to haunt me until I understand.
