Why does the market go up?

I know 2 rules of investing:

1. Past performance does not guarantee future results

2. Time in the market wins because the market always goes up over time.

But what is stopping the market from going down for the next 50 years? And if your answer is “Because it always goes up overtime” then see rule number 1.
