How do you evaluate if someone is genuinely interested in marriage or you’re just being emotionally strung along?
I’m looking for some honest perspectives from people around my age who may have gone through similar situations.
Recently, a girl from my community reached out to me through family contacts with the intention of exploring marriage. Initially, she showed a lot of interest and enthusiasm. Our early conversations were quite good—we spoke a lot, shared about our lives, and tried to get to know each other on a deeper level.
However, over time I’ve started noticing a few things that are making me uncomfortable and giving me second thoughts.
She has mentioned that she was previously in a relationship and from what I understand, she hasn’t fully moved on yet. She also still has her social media accounts shared/accessible with her ex. That part especially made me pause because it feels like there are still emotional ties there.
At the same time, I’ve noticed that her interest in talking with me has gradually reduced. Earlier she used to initiate conversations and show curiosity, but now the communication feels much more minimal and inconsistent. Because of this shift, I’ve started getting this uneasy feeling that maybe I’m being emotionally kept as an option rather than someone she is seriously considering.
Recently she suggested that we should meet once in person to see how things feel. In principle that makes sense, but for me it would involve traveling by flight which would cost around ₹25k and require quite a bit of planning. Because of the doubts already in my mind, I’m struggling to decide whether it’s worth making that effort.
What I’m trying to understand is:
1-How do you psychologically evaluate whether someone is genuinely interested in building a future versus just being unsure or keeping options open?
2-Are these signs of someone who hasn’t moved on yet and might not be emotionally ready?
3-Would you still go ahead and meet in person in a situation like this, or would you step back at this stage?
4-If I decide that this situation doesn’t feel right and want to close things respectfully, what is the best way to communicate that without hurting the other person?
I’m trying to approach this thoughtfully because I’ve gone through a long-term breakup in the past and I don’t want to ignore red flags or end up in another emotionally complicated situation.
Would really appreciate honest advice from people who have experienced similar situations or have a more objective perspective.
