Astrophysics

First let me say, I am a woodworker/carver. I myself don't understand much about physics, but something left me very curious.

what practical applications does the field of astrophysics allow? As far a I can fathom, it feels similar to being an expert on the Titanic. You could know where the captains chamber is, the pool etc. but you can't get there, and it makes no difference in anyone's lives?

I just read about a giant volcanic cave found on Venus. What we those astrophysicists reaction? "okay cool, let's spend another 100 mil to find another useless piece of information."

would any care to explain the point of the field, because I am struggling in all honesty

ps. none of the this was meant to attack anyone, I'm just curious and can't wrap my head around it?
