AITAH for telling my father to stop glazing my brother?
Long post, but I wanna know if I'm thinking too much into this. Honest advice and telling me if I'm the AH or not would be appreciated.
My brother (20M) and I (19F) never grew up with the traditional man vs woman stereotypes, for example we both were taught to cook and clean, while also how to fix a car and all that. Despite that, I often feel like my family glazes my brother too much.
The thing is, my brother is much better at the traditional feminine roles compared to me. He's always enjoyed cooking and baking, and is currently in culinary school. In comparison, I'm more inclined towards the masculine roles, such as car repair, fixing things around the house and such. However, there was never really an issue of this because we both understood that there were hardships in the chores we were doing. Saying that, it doesn't mean I don't help around in the kitchen or in the household in general.
Whenever my parents throw a chore in the air, usually I'm the first one to respond and do it. I never minded this, as in the culture I'm from it's considered normal to basically break your back for your elders. However, the real issue which I've noticed is that I never get appreciated for any chores that I do, which is the majority of them, whereas my brother does 1/4th of the amount of chores I do and gets praised very heavily.
I told my mother about this, and she just shrugged it off saying that I'm overthinking, whereas my father said I should be glad that I'm able to do work for my parents. This is where me and my father got into a disagreement because I said that he never appreciates me for said work and he appreciates my brother even after my brother disrespects him to every possible extent. My father just shrugged and said he (my brother) still does more work than me, which used to be true (because of personal mental health issues which I won't deep dive into), but now isn't.
So I got upset and went and cried in my room. While I was doing so, my brother came in the room and started making fun of me, and when I told him it wasn't funny and I was genuinely hurt, he said I was being overdramatic and was always victimizing myself. As I was already emotional and really mad, I told him to get lost and not to speak to me again unless he realised what he said was wrong and insensitive.
Well, he went and complained to my father, who came and started yelling at me that I disrespected my brother and I'm a brat who is good for nothing and doesn't help around the house. There were some points where I did agree with him, such as saying to give me five minutes to do a chore, but that's because I was exhausted from other ones. But yeah, he went off on me and then I very slightly raised my voice and told him he overglazes my brother and my brother doesn't do shit around the house anymore and still eats up all the praise. My father obviously got mad and hasn't spoken to me since, and has been speaking to me through my mother.
Word spread around my family and now my aunts, uncles, and cousins are divided. Some, who have seen how much I do around the house, are on my side and telling my dad to snap out of his delusions, but majority of them are saying I was disrespectful and no matter how mad I was I shouldn't have argued with my father.
I know my dad's not a bad guy, and he's genuinely been improving as a person, and I know my brother also does help around the house sometimes, especially when guests come over, so I feel very conflicted and would like to know if I'm the AH for snapping at something this small?
