Boyfriend downloaded Tinder while I was away – is this something a relationship can recover from?
Hi everyone, I really need some outside perspective because I feel completely overwhelmed right now.
I (F) have been with my boyfriend since 2020. He has been my person for years – the one I talk to every day, the closest person in my life. We’ve been through a lot together, and overall I would say our relationship had been good, with normal ups and downs.
However, in 2024 he broke up with me. His reason was that he had doubts and wanted to experience other people / meet new people. That was very painful, but after about 3 months we got back together. After that, things actually felt good again. We had some small arguments here and there, but nothing major, and I felt like we were in a more mature place.
Recently, I went to Brazil for one month. When I came back, I was at his place and I saw on his phone that he had downloaded Tinder while I was away – and not just downloaded it, but actually used it (based on activity).
We had talked about things like this before in our relationship, so I never expected him to do something like that behind my back. What hurts me the most is not just the app itself, but that instead of talking to me if he had doubts, he chose to go there.
When I confronted him, he said:
- he didn’t meet anyone
- he didn’t exchange numbers
- he didn’t want to leave me
- he used it to “see if he finds other women interesting” and to deal with his doubts
He says he loves me and that I’m the most important person to him, but also admits that he has recurring doubts and tried to handle them alone.
For me, love means choosing your partner even when things are difficult, and communicating instead of looking outside the relationship. This feels like a huge breach of trust.
Now I’m completely torn:
- Part of me loves him deeply and doesn’t want to lose him
- Another part of me feels like this is a pattern (since he already left once because of doubts)
- I’m afraid I will never fully trust him again
I also feel incredibly hurt because I believed we were in a different place in our relationship, where we would talk about problems instead of doing something like this.
My questions:
- Is this something a relationship can realistically recover from?
- Is this “just insecurity” or a sign he’s not truly committed?
- How do you rebuild trust after something like this?
- Am I ignoring a pattern here?
I feel like I’m losing not only him, but also the life and connection we built over years.
Any advice would really help. Thank you.
