The Sacred Fucking Art of Venting
Oh, great.
Here we go.
Another emotional hurricane
Ripping through the living room,
And I’m the lucky bastard
Standing in the splash zone
“Just listen,” they say.
JUST LISTEN.
Right.
Sure.
Let me put my entire fucking personality
In a chokehold
So I don’t try to fix anything
Like the problem-solving shitbag I am.
I sit there like a decorative plant
From the Dollar Store
Nodding my head
With the enthusiasm of a half-dead pigeon.
Uh-huh.
Wow.
Unbelievable.
Tragic.
Totally fucked.
Yes, your boss is a sack of crap.
Meanwhile, my brain is screaming:
SOLUTION.
SOLUTION.
SOLUTION.
But I can’t say a goddamn word
Because apparently,
This is not a “help me” moment...
This is a “bear witness to my misery” moment,
And I’m supposed to sit here
like the Patron Saint of Shut the Fuck Up.
So I nod.
I murmur.
I adjust my face
Into that universal expression of
Deep empathetic bullshit.
I stare into their eyes like
I understand the emotional choreography
Happening in front of me
When really I’m thinking,
“How the fuck long do I hold this pose?”
They rant.
They rave.
They unload the entire dumpster fire
Of their day
Into my lap,
And I’m like,
“Absolutely, yes,
Your life is a flaming sphincter,
I can see that.”
And the whole time
I’m terrified of doing it wrong.
Of nodding too fast
Of nodding too slow
Of nodding in the wrong fucking language
Of accidentally saying
“Well actually—”
And detonating the entire room.
But I stay.
I sit in the emotional sauna
Until my soul is peeling off.
I give them the full
“Holy shit, that sucks”
Olympic performance.
Because somehow
This stupid ritual of
Not Fixing A Goddamn Thing
Helps.
And if they walk away feeling lighter,
If they feel heard,
If they feel even a millimeter less doomed,
Then fine.
Great.
Perfect.
I’ll be your emotional trash can.
I’ll hold all your flaming bags of bullshit
With my bare hands.
Just don’t ask me how I did it,
Because honestly?
I have no fucking clue.
I just nodded
And hoped to God
That counted.
