Visiting in August?

Hey there, I've been thinking of doing a trip to Croatia and would have some questions.

Is visiting Croatia in August a good idea or is it super hot then?

And if flying to Dubrovnik, is it a nice place to stay for 5 days or are there more quiet, less touristy towns to visit and spend more time there? I don't plan on staying in one place for too long, the plan was to rent a car and see as much as possible. Maybe ideally pick up the car in Dubrovnik and then drop it off in a different town where I'd spend a few days.
