Does anyone else pop the top off their tank to get cotton to wick, effectively extending the life of prebuilt atomizers?
So, I've vaped for years. I have pretty much always used tanks with prebuilt coils- I currently use a geekvape z series tank- and have found that with this one and all others I've had, the coils stop wicking sufficiently for use waaaay before they seem like they should: cotton still looks fresh, vape tastes fine, not visibly burnt, no debris in it, using colorless or nearly colorless juice.
I have always thought it seemed like an issue of suction forming within the tank, similar to how if you dip the end of a straw into water, put your finger over the other end, and pull the straw out: the water stays in the straw, like the vape juice stays in the tank instead of wicking into the cotton... so I see it like popping the cap of the tank off is like taking your finger off the top of the straw, removing the suction, allowing the juice to flow and wick into the cotton! Its the same reason pods usually have a little hole somewhere in the body of the pod that allows air to freely flow into to pod to then let juice wick into its cotton...
I only do this after my cotton stops wicking sufficiently on its own, and if it still looks okay (not burnt etc). If I didn't do this, the cotton would NOT wick enough juice on its own to vape and I'd 100% get a burnt hit. I start doing it maybe a week or so after putting a new atomizer in, when it stops wicking passively, and because of it they last me like a month/100mL of juice or more, instead of like a week.
I have been doing this successfully for years to "extend" the life of my coils. It doesn't seem to be common knowledge however, as I have been unable to find any discussion about it specifically. I am curious if anyone else does this or knows of it?! I know that most people know if you leave the cap off for too long, it will flood your cotton/vape with juice lol, but not if anyone else utilizes this method to get the most out of their prebuilt atomizers.
TLDR: please discuss/does anyone else pop the cap of their tank for a second or 2 to help their juice wick, effectively "extending the life" of prebuilt atomizers?
