Freezing and confused
Hey all,
TLDR I thought AC in our new apartment wasn't working because it kicked on, and was blowing, but not cold air. I reported it, was informed they (property management) doesnt allow both systems to be"on at the same time". Maintenence came, same day, switched them, but now it's 50° colder outside than it was last week, it's 62° in my apartment and my heat isn't....heating, just blowing. Temps are up and down. This isn't sustainable. I don't know what to do.
We just moved in to a new apartment. we live in a state where temps and weather can and does vary drastically day-to-day, especially in the spring. It shot up from highs in the mid 30's to highs nearing 80° in the span of 2 days. The apartment became insufferably hot and muggy (frequent rain), so we kicked on the AC....no cold air.
Assuming the AC was broken (moved in Feb, so first use) I reported it to the property manager. She smiled and said "We don't allow you to run AC and heat at the same time'". I've been renting on and off for 20 years and have never heard this. She asked if I would like my AC on? I said yes, about 15 mins later maintenence showed up, about 2 mins after opening the closet to my furnace, I had cold air running out of the vents.
problem: it is now 40° colder outside. Some days, the low from one day to the high the next is a difference of 60°. I can't really pick one or the other at this time. I also can't have maintenence constantly coming out to switch them. case in point, it's almost 6am on Easter Sunday and it's 62° in my apartment.
She called it a switch on the furnace that they flip. Can someone help me out with how to do this myself?
**Feel free to skip this part**, but to assuage anyone's concerns, I want to say:
-
We are responsible for all utilities except for water. We are paying for gas heat and for electric=AC. The utilities are in our name, and come to our address.

Yes, she said they "don't allow it", but I go through leases (got burned bad by a slum lord in my early 20's) with a fine tooth comb before signing. I double checked and no where is this policy stated in the lease. The only mention of utilities in the lease are as follows: 1. Tenant responsible for everything but water 2. [insert business names] are the properties gas and electric provider and you must go through them for services. 3. Account numbers for gas and electric must be provided at lease signing, if not, there won't be a lease signing. 4. States the minimum temp the apartment must be at during freezing weather. Failure to maintain minimum temp is grounds for eviction and lawsuits for damages, if any, as a result. 5. Utilities being shut off due to none payment is a violation of the lease and may result in eviction.

There is no complex wide switch from heat to AC. Tenants report to staff when they want their heating/air switched over. Our next door neighbors are elderly and have not had their heat switched to AC at this time. One neighbor upstairs has switched, the other has not.
ANY help, advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
