Bought a Neo, considering swapping for an Air because of the RAM - is it worth double the price? (Aus)
I'm a first year uni student and needed a new laptop + I wanted to make the switch to the apple ecosystem, so I bought a Neo. I have a mid-range gaming PC at home, so I figured I didn’t need a MacBook Air or Pro since I wouldn’t be playing any games on it + my degree is biomedicine, so I won’t be doing any photo or video editing. I really just needed a laptop to bring to university to write essays/work on assignments, and take tests/quizzes. I'll mainly be using Word, PowerPoint, Excel and maybe have like 10 to 15 tabs open in Safari.
I’ve been using the Neo for a couple days now and I’m pretty happy with it, battery life is good and it runs smoothly, however I’m a bit worried about the RAM situation and how many years it’ll be able to last. I understand that 8GB of RAM runs a lot better on Apple devices than Windows, but I still feel a bit iffy about it. I’ve been keeping an eye on the memory usage in Activity Monitor, and for the most part the graph stays green, but there have been a handful times where it’s turned yellow for some reason, even though I didn’t have many apps open/tabs on Safari. Most of the time, it says it’s using around 6.5GB of memory.
I’m in Australia, so the price of an M5 MacBook Air is unfortunately over double that of a MacBook Neo ($1,639 and $749AUD respectively, with the student discount), which is the main reason I bought it. I could buy an M4 MacBook Air for $1,399, but that’s still about double the price for double the RAM, but the same amount of storage (256GB). I know I’m also paying for some additional features like a backlit keyboard, haptic trackpad, MagSafe, Touch ID, etc. They’d be nice to have but aren’t a dealbreaker and I don’t care too much about them.
What I’m wondering is would it be worth it to return it and buy an Air, and if not, approximately how many years would the Neo be able to last me? Of course no one knows for sure, but it would be nice to get an idea. My plan is to squeeze as many years as I can out of it, ideally 4 or 5 years.
TLDR: bought a Neo for uni but unsure about the 8GB of RAM and how long it will be able to last me. Is it worth it to swap for an Air, which is around double the price in Australia?
