Fixed my paywall and MRR increased by 130%

I spent months tweaking my paywall copy, testing pricing, moving the CTA button around. MRR barely moved. The problem wasn't the paywall itself, it was where I was putting it.

The core issue with most paywall optimization is that you're working backwards. You're looking at conversion rate and asking "how do I get more people to click" when the real question is "are people seeing the paywall at the right moment."

Here's the framework that actually worked for me.

Step 1: Find your value moment before you touch the paywall

In Mixpanel, compare your converting users against everyone else. Not by demographics, by behavior. What did paying users do before they converted that non-paying users didn't. How many sessions, which feature, how much time in the app.

In my edtech app, users who completed at least one lesson before hitting the paywall converted at 4x the rate of users who saw it on session start. Users who spent more than 8 minutes in the app before the paywall showed up were the ones actually paying.

That's your value moment. The specific action that separates people who see the value from people who don't.

Step 2: Move the trigger, not the design

Once you know the moment, move the paywall there. Not after signup, not after a time delay. After the action that predicts conversion.

This is a one line change in your code. It moves the needle more than any copy or design test you'll ever run.

Step 3: Track the right events or you're flying blind

Most apps have paywall_viewed and subscription_created. That's not enough. You need session_started, feature_completed, time_on_app, paywall_shown, and paywall_dismissed at minimum.

I was missing half of those. I build everything in Claude Code and I'm pretty deep into MCP so I went looking for something that could plug into that workflow. I am currently using hivoltaire, it's a Claude Code MCP that wires the behavioral events directly into your codebase. That's when the cohort differences became obvious.

Once you have the data the answer is usually obvious. The hard part is getting the visibility in the first place. Most founders skip that and go straight to optimizing something that isn't the actual problem.
