field sales construction reps need offline crm. what actually works on job sites?
Most CRM platforms completely fall apart on a jobsite. And I mean that literally - spotty cell service, dusty screens, one hand holding plans and the other trying to pull up a quote. The big players built their stuff for desk jockeys, not people doing actual territory work.
Construction reps especially. They're not sitting in windshield time filling out forms. They're walking a property, talking to the GC, maybe a foreman's standing there waiting. You try to get them to navigate four screens just to log a site visit? They won't do it. The data doesn't get captured, your pipeline gets fuzzy, and nobody wins.
Offline-first is the only way this actually works. Your reps need to pull customer history, previous projects, quotes - all without waiting for that connection bar to fill up. And when they get back to the truck or office later, it syncs. That's it. That's the feature that matters most.
Interface has to be stripped down on mobile too. Not like, make it pretty and minimal. I mean ruthlessly simple. Get to the information in two taps, not five. Log an activity in 10 seconds. A lot of the platforms I've tested - and I've tested them all - they require way too much clicking.
Voice notes actually get used if the tool lets you record a 30-second memo about site conditions or client feedback. Most CRMs still half-ass the voice stuff though.
The mistake people make is thinking mobile and desktop need to look the same or have the same features. They don't. Heavy lifting - proposals, follow-ups, forecasting - that happens at a desk or in the truck cab. The mobile app is for real-time lookups and quick logging. That's the whole job it needs to do.
What's actually broken for you right now? Bad sync? Too many clicks? Or is the bigger issue just finding something that doesn't treat field work like a checkbox exercise.
