AA and forgiveness is so invalidating

NSFW

I became an alcoholic after being raped and sexually abused and one of the biggest things shoved down my throat was “forgiveness is for the self not the person who wronged you.” It’s all I heard for all eight months of my recovery and I’m so glad to be done with those people who think like that. I know they define forgiveness differently but why not use the word resentment instead?

I remember in recovery having to watch a (Christian) movie about a father whose little girl was kidnapped raped and killed (they never found the body either just her clothes…) and the whole movie was about finding forgiveness through god and I am just so dismayed that anyone would show something like that to victims of abuse, especially sexual abuse. And I’m not religious but my family background is and theirs is a polytheistic religion. Even if I was religious I think I’d still find AA suffocating with the narrow beliefs they have.

Not to mention, a LOT of the AA meetings had SO many casual abusers. Dudes who bragged about watching porn without a second thought, males who would talk about how their wife and kids have a restraining order against them but it’s ok because “gods my wife now” YOU KNOW THR TYPE 😭

Anyways that was my rant, I’m about to reach 6 months sober and I’m very proud of myself. Spite has been a strong tool for my recovery 🙃 “you can’t get sober without the 12 steps” oh yeah watch me bitch!!!
