What was the history of the Cult of Cybele in Ancient Rome, and how did the state handle its eunuch priests?
I know the cult of Cybele originates in Phrygia and was then adopted by the Greeks, but I'm especially curious about its existence in the Roman Republic/Empire.
Especially because, as far as I'm aware, the galli priests were an important part of her cult, and castration was taboo/banned in Ancient Rome.
Did the state try to pass laws regarding how Cybele's cult could be practised?
Did they try to make an "official" state-approved version that removed its more Eastern elements?
How were the eunuch priests treated?
