Non-Tech tried Railway to deploy a Python script. It worked. Honest review: 6/10.
Update from the person who rated PythonAnywhere 4/10 last week. Tried Railway after Reddit suggested it.
This morning my briefing was in my inbox at 6am. Laptop was off. First time in 3 weeks anything I built runs without me.
What went well:
- Connects to GitHub smoothly, one-click "Continue with GitHub"
- Auto-detects code changes and redeploys automatically. This part felt magical
- No API whitelist issues. Stocks work. Everything PythonAnywhere blocked, Railway allows
- Laptop can be fully off. Confirmed this morning
What was tricky:
- Needed GitHub first (had to learn what a repo, commit, and push mean)
- CRON syntax for scheduling. "0 14 * * *" apparently means 7am Pacific. A time picker would be nice
- Environment variables tab took a while to find
- Multiple crashes before it worked. OAuth on a server is different from OAuth on your laptop
- Free trial is 30 days or $5 credit, then ~$5/month
Time comparison:
- Building the morning briefing: 30 minutes
- Deploying on PythonAnywhere: 2 hours, partial result (stocks broken)
- Deploying on Railway: 2+ hours, full result (everything works)
Platform comparison:
| PythonAnywhere | Railway | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup difficulty | Medium | Medium-Hard |
| Needed GitHub | No | Yes |
| Free tier limits | API whitelist blocks Yahoo Finance | 30 days / $5 credit |
| Scheduling | Simple task scheduler | CRON syntax |
| Everything works? | Partial (stocks broken) | Yes |
| Laptop can be off? | Yes | Yes |
| Non-engineer rating | 4/10 | 6/10 |
Bottom line: Railway works and I'm genuinely happy my briefing arrives automatically now. The setup took longer than building the actual script, mostly around GitHub and CRON syntax. But the auto-redeploy feature is great, and unlike PythonAnywhere, nothing is blocked on the free tier.
For non-tech folks: budget 2 hours and have Claude ready. It's doable but not intuitive.
