We tracked 41 prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google for 5 months. Here is what actually moved our GEO score.
Running a small digital product (pen plotter conversion tool). Started doing systematic GEO tracking about 3 months ago. Sharing the data because I haven't seen many posts with actual before/after numbers.
Setup: 41 prompts tracked weekly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI. Each prompt is a query our potential customers actually type. 1,521 total queries run over the period.
What moved the needle:
-
FAQ and comparison content outperformed everything else. Structured Q&A pages got cited 3-4x more than standard blog posts. AI engines seem to pull from FAQ schema heavily.
-
Prompt tracking revealed a gap between visibility and revenue. Perplexity mentioned us in 334 responses. ChatGPT only 42. But ChatGPT drove 6x more actual sales. If we had only optimized for mention volume we would have over-invested in Perplexity and missed the buyer channel.
-
Competitor gap analysis was more useful than keyword research. Finding the specific prompts where competitors ranked and we were absent gave us a direct content brief. We wrote directly to those prompts.
-
llms.txt made a measurable difference in how accurately AI described the product. Before: AI would sometimes describe us as hardware. After: descriptions became accurate within 2-3 weeks of publishing.
Current status: #1 AI visibility in our category, beating a competitor with 10+ years of market presence and a $475 product price. We are at 29.90 EUR one-time.
The full 5-article series on how we built this is documented as a case study if anyone wants the methodology details.
Questions: What content types are you finding get cited most reliably? And is anyone else seeing the ChatGPT vs Perplexity conversion difference?
