The next killer feature (not AI) for a new dev board generation: USB power management
ESP took the crown with on board Wifi/BT on a cheap microcontroller. That one feature paved the way for a market dominance which resulted in a thriving community and development scene. And now they seem to be betting on making AI interfaces.
But the one feature that would dominate the market like the antenna did is a solid USB power management. I would pay double for a 20V devboard that not only charges a lipo, but quick charges it, handling the protocol. I just have to I²C in a voltage for the new relay connector. The board handles the higher voltages, steps down the 5 and 3.3 lines, and gives the option to drive up to 20V.
It would unlock the ability to build solar converters, power banks, Hifi amps, and all kinds of things. It would need decent protection and cooling, with heat and over current shutdown before things melt. It must hand over USB data lines after the handshake. And the microcontroller must have an OTG/host mode to connect standard periphery.
It would remove the limitation of slow or external power from development. And it would attack the market of JBL, Anker, and everyone else with open source alternatives.
Would you pay extra for a 20V QC devboard?
