Gobbling, but not able to see bird clearly

I’m in California. For spring season, if a turkey is gobbling, but I can’t definitively see a beard, is it legal to take? I’m new to turkey hunting, and passed up a gobbler today because I couldn’t see a beard clearly. Just want to confirm I did the right thing, or if I just let one go that i could’ve taken. Thanks
