I just read the book in 2 days. Amaze amaze amaze!
I mean, just wow. I want to start off by mentioning that I tend to be a slower reader, or at least that I make very little progress on days that I actually find the motivation to read. Even some of my favorite books took me a week or two to get through with days where I straight up just didn't feel like reading. I used to read all the time when I was younger but got bored of it around my teens and replaced reading novels with reading Manga. Around 2022 or so, I decided to get back into reading books partly because I missed it and also because I needed study for my own writing (I'm a writer who dreams of being an author). Out of all the books I've read or DNF'd during that time period (Sanderson, Abercrombie, Stephen King, Ursula K. Le Guin, Christopher Buehlman, John Gwyne, etc) this is by far the quickest I've ever consumed a full book.
Actually, Project Hail Mary may very well be my favorite book of all time.
I couldn't put it down at all.
Ever since I was a kid I've been a very proud astrophile (one who is obsessed with space). Even greater than my dream of being an author was my dream of exploring the stars, of stepping foot onto distant alien worlds and becoming witness to alien sunsets and sunrises, to alien moonlight and their constellations. I dreamed of space exploration as I stared at the moon each night, dreaming as all kids should. The kind of stuff that makes Sci-Fi tick. Of course now I understand I will never be able to live that dream, for if such travel ever exists it will be beyond my time, when all that remains of me and all of us today is but dust and energy and memories. But I find my ways to simulate it as best I can. It's for that reason why I love Sci-Fi. Particularly soft Sci-Fi as I adore the rule of cool, and space magic is a lot easier for my itty-bitty little brain to comprehend than realistic science (or even pseduo-science). Most hard Sci-Fi I've tried to get into was just a little too big-brain for me. Ironically, the only two books I've read that count as hard Sci-Fi I enjoyed was both The Martian and Project Hail Mary. Despite my inability to comprehend math and science within those two stories for the most part, I absolutely adored them.
I'm too tired to really write out a full review of the book; I stayed up the last 5-6 hours non-stop reading PHM and now it's 8am. What I can say though is that the book from start to finish gave me that space exploration high I have been chasing all my life that very few ips have been able to do for me. The others being Insterstellar and No Mans Sky.
5/5 book, definitely up there in my top 5 of all time now. Just gotta go see the movie.
