The content metric most SaaS teams are not tracking that is becoming more important than keyword rankings
SaaS companies spend a lot of time and money tracking keyword rankings. Position one for a high-intent keyword feels like a win. Position seven feels like something to fix. That framing made complete sense when Google was the primary place buyers did their research.
The buying journey for SaaS products has changed enough in the last eighteen months that keyword rankings alone are giving an increasingly incomplete picture of content performance.
A significant and growing portion of early-stage SaaS research now starts inside an AI assistant. Someone evaluating project management tools, or looking for an AI writing platform, or comparing CRM options will type that question directly into ChatGPT or Perplexity before they ever open a browser tab and run a Google search. The sources cited in those AI responses are doing real commercial work for the brands they mention.
The metric that tracks this is AI citation visibility. Which pages on your site get referenced by LLMs, which assistants cite you most, and whether that number grows as your content volume and structure improve.
Most SaaS marketing teams are not measuring this at all. Not because they do not think it matters but because the tooling to track it has only recently become available. AI citations were essentially unmeasurable at scale twelve months ago.
Tools that now include this tracking, such as this SEO tool, let SaaS content teams see citation data alongside traditional SEO metrics for the first time. The practical value is knowing which content is performing on both channels and which is Google-only, so you can make structural decisions based on real data rather than assumptions.
For SaaS specifically, showing up cited in the AI response when a buyer asks "what is the best tool for X" is arguably more valuable than a page one Google ranking for the same query. The buyer intent at that moment is extremely high and the trust transfer from an AI recommendation is different from a search result click.
Worth adding to your reporting if it is not there already.
