Why does idle transfiguration only work from time to time?

Why is it that whenever I pop ult as mahito, sometimes my 1 move, idle transfiguration, is just a dash and a hit, not causing instant death, but sometimes it's more of a red, and it will instantly kill the target through blocks, if anyone knows what requirements i need to meet to be able to one shot, please tell me
