Very loose theory I have

Speculation and Theory-Crafting

Ok hear me out: Poppy Playtime is (very very loosely) based off Dante’s Inferno. Let me explain.

Chapter 1: most peaceful one, wandering through isn’t really good or bad, it’s just… empty.

Chapter 2: Mommy Long Legs throws us into several children’s games with deadly twists. the whole area, really, is a corruption of innocence. Meanwhile, we’re tricked by Poppy into going further.

Chapter 3: We learn about The Hour of Joy. How bodies were dragged to the bottom for food. Meanwhile, the whole place is guarded by a huge, terrifying beast, Catnap.

Chapter 4: A major theme I see is anger. The Haven hates Poppy, Poppy wants to blow everything up, and who do we fight in the end? Our own ally, fueled by rage, as we’re forced to fight him.

Chapter 5: We meet the Prototype for the first time. We see his power over the factory, be it the news or the fact that he’s basically immortal. Heretics are either locked up, like Ms. Gracie/Lily Lovebraids, or killed, like Huggy and Kissy (perchance).

Now let’s look at Dante’s Inferno.

Layer 1: Limbo. For those that weren’t evil, but not Christian either. It is not good or bad, it’s dull, empty.

Layer 2: Lust. What does lust do? A) it corrupts innocence, and B) seduces.

Layer 3: Gluttony. Here the hungry are persecuted by Cerberus, a huge, terrifying monster.

Layer 5 (they skipped Greed I guess): Anger. Punishment is to be forced to fight eternally.

Layer 6: Heresy. Acts against God. Punishment: locked in Iron Coffins.

I should also note, Layer 6 is the entrance to the City of Dis, the final layers, the sins God hates the most: violence, and fraud. Waiting at the bottom, waste-deep in ice, punished for his treachery, is the Devil himself.
