Whats a budget friendly option for a self defense handgun?

Title, I’m not looking at spending much more than 300 as most of every paycheck is accounted for as I have kids and various bills/debts to pay off, plus i’m not a gun guy so it’s not really necessary to have a ton of bells and whistles just needs to shoot when i want it to. but recently i’ve had a few situations where if it had escalated I’d have wanted a gun to defend myself. (most recently got followed home by someone who thought i brake checked them)

Also had a lot of break ins at my apartment complex this month and i’d rather not have someone break in with only a knife to defend myself and my children. Any recommendations?
