Are miracle knots a protective style?

I have been on my length retention journey for about 3 years now. I have fine 4c kinky coily hair, through trial and tribulations i've learned added hair (knotless braids, sew ins, quickweaves, u parts) stunts my length retention simply because I have no access to my scalp leaving it dry and brittle resulting in breakage.

I have been wearing mini twist and braids allowing me to hydrate with water and creams. I keep up with trims, treatments and deep conditioning with heat resulting in tremendous growth!

However, I have seen this new miracle knots trend where your natural hair is braided then a curl pattern of your choice is crochet into the braids. Is this a protective style? I have been fearful of using extensions and setting myself back on my journey. Has anyone installed this style and seen damage or growth?
