1981 Hyatt regency walkway collapse

Discussion 💡

I’m 31 years old and have lived in the Kansas City area my whole life and just recently heard about the walkway collapse that killed 114 people. It’s kind of crazy to me that it’s not a well-known part of kc history. I’ve been in that hotel on multiple occasions, never knowing that such a tragedy occurred. Am I the only one that thinks it’s kind of weird they remodeled the lobby area and reopened it? I understand it’s a tall hotel and the rest of it was not damaged, but it still just seems disturbing to me after reading about how horrific it was. Not to mention sprinklers going off and the water was high enough they worried that survivors trapped under the rubble could drown. In addition it being a horrific tragedy, that’s also kind of gross? Idk, just surprised to learn about it and curious of other people’s thoughts!
