Do you feel GameCube was a major step back from the N64?

Discussion / Question

I believe the Nintendo GameCube to be my favourite console ever, but I'm not going to deny for a second that it was far less successful than the N64. The N64 boomed with amazing titles all over the place, and although the GameCube had some great games, it was definitely a step backwards in various regards.

A couple of examples I've been thinking about are the Pokemon and WWE games. On N64 they boomed with life with many ideas and they were heralded and considered the best games in their franchises. However, on the GameCube, both Pokemon and WWE games released on the system were big steps back. I understand they wanted to do something new with Pokemon games with more serious storytelling, and the WWE games likely wanted to follow in the same way, but they were all inferior to the brilliance that were their N64 counterparts.

What do you think, do you believe the GameCube was nothing but a big step back from the N64, or do you feel the GameCube did some things way better?
