I hate people seeing lgbtq+ people in media and saying they’re queer just for the sake of representation.
Yes this is coming from the recent post where a guy said he hated “lgbtq+ characters for the sake of representation”, and no I’m not trying to harass them at all. I’m just bringing up the topic because I hate it whenever I hear it.
And honestly, I just think that when people say this, they’re either intentionally trying to stir homophobic/queerphobic stuff or genuinely think ANY gay/trans/queer character in any sort of media is “representation just for the sake of it”.
Like it feels like when people say this (and not just trying to indirectly say they don’t want queer characters in their favorite media), they think that the ONLY way that a queer character could be anything other than “representation for the sake of it” is if their entire character’s story/arc is centered around them being queer. And even then if you have a character who’s entire story revolves around their queer identity, you’ll STILL get dip shits saying stuff like “they’re not a good character, their entire character is just being gay/trans!”.
And they genuinely don’t care this much about a character being straight. Like you never see someone saying “why is this person in a straight relationship, this doesn’t contribute to their character at all” or “their entire personality is only them being straight, there’s nothing else to this character”. It’s such a stupid case of double standards that it’s so damn annoying. You can’t have a character just be queer in a nonchalant way like a straight character can be otherwise your just “making them gay for virtue signaling points” but when you make a character’s entire story revolved around their queerness then it’s obnoxious and annoying and that there’s no other purpose to the character other than being queer.
Like I said don’t harass the guy who sparked the convo here, I’m just kinda annoyed at the sentiment is all.
