Bringing a non modern deck to a modern event, how viable is it to get introduced to the format?
My forays into modern so far have been very bad experiences - I recently bought UR prowess, only to find out that without learning the meta, doing the reps on MODO, I'm simply going to fail again and again. Modern is simply too expensive for me to buy a deck from scratch and to also buy/rent on MODO to be able to practice. I eventually sold it for about 400 USD to recoup some losses, never did like spellslinging anyway.
Wanting to ease my way into the format, I've decided to stop spending money, until I'm able to leave this frame of mind I find myself locked in. Since I'm expected at my LGS and have been invited numerous times already to play modern, as I'm one of the local grinders, I wanted to ask if it's possible to bring a non modern deck, namely a pioneer deck, and from there just start accumulating play experience.

My feeble rationale is that at least is a deck I know how to pilot, I already have it on paper and won't feel buyer's remorse, and soldier on until I can more or less understand what I want to do with modern without commiting again so much money in such an amount of time.
Even if it's just to hit my LGS and have some games, I'm willing to take my lumps and accept I'll play something worse than the field at my LGS - but not knowing the format I ask: is it even considerable, to bring a pioneer deck to a modern event? Or is it an idea that's dead on arrival? Or I'm simply better off, just forgetting about the whole modern ordeal?
