ILR or Spouse Visa Renewal?

My spouse and I are a bit stuck, and I'm looking for help before I sink money into a solicitor.

I've been on a family visa for nearly 5 years, and want to apply for ILR. My spouse is worried because my family visa ends a month after my ILR eligibility starts.

With how quick laws seem to be changing, I do not want to risk getting another family visa with the possibility of the ILR eligibility being pushed even further into the future. My spouse, on the other hand, wants to secure me in the country for the next 2 years and wants to get the visa. We can only really afford one or the other, and we're at an impasse.

I'm studying for the Life In The UK test, and I've been a model resident otherwise. I know what is best will likely be a subjective opinion, but I just want other perspectives. Most of my close immigrant community is also pushing for ILR, but are there any downsides to applying?
