Is it unrealistic to expect a pest control company to do more than set traps and cross their fingers?

So we've been having an unwanted visitor the past few months. He makes a ton of noise that sounds like it's coming from our furnace/AC unit area.

we contacted NextGen to get it taken care of. A consultant came out for an inspection, followed by a couple of guys that came out to patch up entry points and set traps. Since then, they'd come out every week to check the traps and after a while, they never saw anything so they collected the traps and moved on.

We heard nothing for months, since like October.

The sounds have started again. Sounds like something is scratching and freaking out inside our AC unit in the closet where we house all that stuff. NextGen came back, set traps again, tightened up the entry point covers, came back to check the traps a couple of times, found nothing, picked up the traps and left.

Yet, the critter persists.

So is NextGen not doing enough? Do I need to go with a different pest company to get this sorted out? Or is setting traps, checking them, and shrugging when they come up empty pretty much all they can do and this is just something we have to live with?

Because it's driving me crazy and seriously affecting the peace and quiet of our household.

Has anyone run into anything similar but found success in eradicating the problem?

TIA
