Can Etsy support cheap manufactured goods that are not perfect but solve a problem?
Good afternoon reddit, here is some background:
I designed and make a boxes that need to be made as cheap as possible. In its intended use, the buyer may have between 24 to 36 of these items to be used as closeable gaming accessory. Manufactured ones by main companies run about $15 for 8 to $15 for 10 depending on manufacturer and materials and level of assembly, but all of them are cheap, folded plastic that cannot stand on its own and is designed to be flimsy.
So as is the subject for all items I sell, I designed that I would want to use. And I do use it quite a lot. It is 3d printed, and more like a slim traditional gaming box then a origami folded packet.
Anyway, I am getting butchered in reviews. I have had multiple bad reviews now in my previously perfect rating. I have pulled them off for sale, despite knowing there is nothing like them on the market and that I have never used anything better personally.
The problem with the reviews isn't something that I can fix, it is that they "aren't sanded" "aren't finished enough". But when you buy one of these at 4 dollars, with 5 for shipping, after fees you are looking at $0.50 to $1 profit per box before factoring in my time spent. With marketing, that number can be negative. Ideally, yes, someone would buy in bulk so the profit margin becomes something real and tangible and where I was hoping this product would go, but it is not sustainable to have negative reviews tarnish the store with unreasonable demands for a purposefully cheap product.
Let me be clear though: I do remove defects (like burrs), reprint if necessary, and ensure lid latches so that it doesn't shake off. So they do get quality control. The ceiling, though, is not going to be high. Unless I charge 10 dollars or more per box. Which is absolutely unreasonable and I would never expect anyone to buy at this price point.
Question is two-fold:
-
is there a place on Etsy or any website for something made to solve a problem, but at such a low price point? I have not used anything better and that is why I made them. Is there anything to say in description or pictures to lesson this? I know people dont often read descriptions, so this doesnt really help, and the pictures I have are accurate and show these same "unsanded areas" or other perceived defects, which have absolutely no impact on product use when on the outside (I fix the issues on the inside).

is there any response to such unreasonable, damaging reviews? I only have 150 or so sales over 7 months (I have been on ebay much longer, with 7k sales and 900 reviews, and recently made the move) and reviews are so rare, I only have 30 total and several of them negative towards this one product. I also have multiple positive reviews on the same item, more so from people who bought enough for intended use.
