WTI just flipped Brent for the first time since 2009 and the physical market is way worse than futures suggest
tldr - WTI settled at $111.54 on Thursday, Brent at $109.03. It's the first time WTI has traded above Brent since 2009. Dubai at $126 is telling a very different story than paper.
WTI closed above Brent on April 2. Normal structure is Brent at a premium because it reflects seaborne pricing, WTI is landlocked at Cushing. When that flips the market is saying it values barrels you can actually get over barrels that theoretically exist on the water. Still, it's kind of insane that landlocked barrels are priced higher.
Part of it is because WTI front month is May while Brent already rolled to June, but the real driver seems to be record WTI backwardation. The market wants barrels now and it wants ones that don't have to transit a war zone.
Futures apparently are understating how tight this is. Dubai physical crude hit $126/bbl on March 27 per CNBC. That's real barrels being loaded in the Gulf, not paper. Goldman put the war risk premium at $14-18/bbl since early March.
Cushing inventories have actually been building, which is counterintuitive. Rose 3.4M barrels the week of March 20, total US crude stocks at 461.6M for week ended March 27. So it's not a domestic squeeze. It's foreign buyers bidding up US crude because they can't get Middle East barrels. Murban rose like 10% in the same session.
EIA's latest STEO from March 10 forecasts Brent above $95 for the next two months then falling below $80 in Q3 if Hormuz reopens. But that was written when Brent was at $94, it's $109 now. Next STEO drops April 7, so that number is getting revised up.
The two week window matters. Trump's April 2 address said 2-3 more weeks of conflict... Polymarket has ceasefire by April 15 at only 25%.
My read is the paper market is catching up to physical reality. $17 gap between Dubai physical at $126 and Brent futures at $109 is hard to ignore... Either Hormuz reopens fast or futures have a lot more room to run.
