It took me 2 months to get 100 installs, and 10 days to get the next 100. Here’s what changed when I started sweating the small stuff.

Building a solo app is a grind. For the first two months with my app, Secure Card Wallet, I barely scraped together 100 installs, and people were uninstalling it almost immediately because they thought it was a payment tool like Google Pay.

But recently, something clicked. I got 150+ new users in the last month, crossed my next 100 installs in just 10 days, and I’m sitting at a solid 85 Monthly Active Users (MAU).

What changed? I stopped trying to build a generic "wallet" and leaned 100% into building a premium, local-only "vault." I ripped out anything unnecessary and focused on these core rules:

1. Absolute Local Security There are no accounts, no sign-ups, and absolutely no servers. Everything lives in an AES-256 encrypted local database on your phone. I also added OS-level screenshot and screen recording protection. For device upgrades, you get a password-protected local backup file that you fully control.

2. Practical Privacy Features I wanted the app to protect you from everyday risks. CVVs are hidden by default behind a "tap to reveal" lock like real card that flips. There's also an instant-copy button that auto-wipes your clipboard after 60 seconds, ensuring no sensitive numbers get left behind on your device.

3. Making it Feel Physical A local vault shouldn't feel like a spreadsheet.

  • Adding cards: You can use the local OCR camera scanner to read the numbers, or just tap the card to your phone via NFC.
  • The look: I built a custom color palette tool so you can design the digital cards to match your physical ones perfectly.
  • The feel: Has tactile haptic feedback, and the cards physically tilt using your phone's gyroscope.

To match this momentum, I just pushed an update to the Play Store with brand new screenshots and a rewritten description to make sure the "vault" identity is crystal clear.

Getting to 85 active users who trust me with their daily carry is an amazing feeling. For other indie devs here—when you finally found your "core" audience, what was the one feature that made them stick around?
