Got offered a job by a dog friendly office
Recently I went for 2 job roles, where I got offered both. In one of the interviews they said “And how are you with dogs?! This is a dog friendly office” then preceding to talk on and on about two office dogs I didn’t give a fuck about.
On one hand I’m glad I was told in the interview. On the other hand it felt incredibly unprofessional to dangle the “are you a dog person” threat during an interview (where obviously there is pressure to present well and not be judged as a person).
Thankfully I was offered another role with a different company and went with that. But it’s just frustrating to be put in that position where I either need to lie to get a job or be “outed” as someone that feels distracted by dogs and rejected from a job role.
It would be one thing if the dogs visited but for dogs to be just living in an open office space from 9am to 5pm seems unprofessional and honestly annoying.
I understand most people like dogs and they think it’s fun. But for those of us who have hygiene OCD, or are neurodivergent and overestimated, or who have dog attack trauma, or anxiety, or who simply don’t want that kind of distraction at work; it seems extremely unfair.
Then to mention it in an interview, where they clearly have power over you and where you’ve clearly prepared to impress them is pretty unfair. Obviously us non dog people are subject to extreme amounts of hatred, discrimination and judgement (which might sound dramatic but anyone in this forum will tell you how bad it is. And for most people the attitude and judgement from dog owners has pushed them to be more extreme in their dislike for dogs)
Personally I’ve given up on trying to convince people of my experience (that I can’t focus on anything if a dog barks or runs around, that the smell, hair noises irritate me and that I’m calmer when a dog is not around). I have been mature and accepted that most people are dog obsessed, and that we have differences (yet they don’t seem to accept me). I accept our differences. But I just don’t understand why dog owners are so inconsiderate towards people that are different towards them, and why they don’t respect our boundaries.
