Can't turn on debug over wifi?

So Ive been at this for over an hour, trying to make a watch face for my Galaxy watch 4. I got developer mode on, I turned on adb debugging. Every time I go to wireless debugging and try to turn it on, the watch wants me to connect to wifi. I try to connect to the WiFi my laptop is on and it just automatically disconnects? Is there something I'm missing here? I'm generally new to smart watches.
