The One Piece isn't a treasure. It's a unified world — and the name has been the answer for 25 years. [Theory]
People have been connecting dots across the Void Century lore, the Elbaf Harley texts, and the mythological inspirations behind Oda's characters, and I think the endgame is finally clear enough to lay out in full. Buckle up because this is long.
🌍 Start with the celestial framework Oda built
Most people know the Gorosei are named after planets — Saturn, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter. The Ancient Weapons cover three more — Neptune (Poseidon/Shirahoshi), Pluto (Pluton), and Uranus. Garling, the new Elder replacing Saturn, has explicitly moon-shaped hair. Luffy is the Sun God Nika.
Notice what's missing? Earth.
That's Imu. Every piece of evidence points to it. Imu's name reversed is Umi — Japanese for "sea/earth." Their family name, Nerona, means "black" in Italian (nero), positioning them as the darkness to Luffy's light. Their powers — manipulating life, granting immortality, controlling others — are all attributes of an Earth/nature deity. Even in Skypiea, the Shandians worshipped four gods: Sun, Rain, Forest, and Earth. Oda planted this 20 years ago.
So you have a perfect solar system:
Imu = Earth (the center of World Government power, literally the ground everything sits on)
Garling = Moon (orbiting Imu, enforcing its darkness)
Luffy = Sun (the liberating force crashing into the system from outside)
🐍 The Red Line is Jörmungandr
This is where it gets wild. The Red Line is not a natural geographical feature. The Elbaf arc all but confirmed it was artificially created.
In Norse mythology, Jörmungandr is the World Serpent — a giant snake that encircles the Earth by biting its own tail (the Ouroboros symbol, which is also sometimes depicted as a red serpent). When Jörmungandr releases its tail, Ragnarök begins.
In the Elbaf Harley texts, characters don't call it the Red Line — they call it the "blood snake." Dorry and Brogy speak ominously about the world nearing its end because "the blood-covered serpent stirs." Ida literally says she "crossed the blood snake" when referring to the Red Line.
The theory: Imu, the Earth God, created the Red Line — a serpentine wall of stone that encircles the world, dividing one ocean into four isolated seas. It's a prison. It's not geography. It's control.
Think about what the Red Line actually does:
It divides the world into four disconnected blues, making it impossible for people to unite
It creates the Grand Line as a dangerous barrier making cross-world travel nearly impossible
It sits the Celestial Dragons (Imu's servants) literally on top of it at Mariejois — ruling from the spine of the serpent
Vegapunk confirmed the world has been slowly sinking since the Void Century — which aligns with the world being unnaturally reshaped when the Red Line was built
The Ancient Giants of Elbaf are believed to have been forced to build the Red Line and died completing it — which is why there are no Ancient Giants left. And if Luffy destroys it, he'd be freeing their trapped souls too.
⚔️ This War Has Happened Before. Twice.
The Harley texts describe three "worlds":
First World — Enslaved people harvested something called Mother Flame from the Earth. They prayed, and the Sun God appeared. Nika fought for their liberation. He was eventually defeated (or left), and the Earth God shrouded the world in darkness with "a serpent of hellfire." Most believe this is when the Red Line was first created.
Second World — Joy Boy's era. The Void Century. Joy Boy (the previous Nika reincarnation) wages war against the World Government/Imu. He fails. The world is flooded. The Red Line remains. Imu wins again.
Third World — Now. Luffy has awakened as Nika again.
This isn't just a story about a treasure hunt. It's a third cycle of the same cosmic battle between the Sun God (liberation) and the Earth God (control). Roger found Joy Boy's treasure at Laugh Tale, understood the whole history, and laughed — because he realized the stage had been set for a third attempt, but it wasn't his time.
He didn't destroy the Red Line because he couldn't yet. The Ancient Weapons weren't assembled. The next Nika hadn't been born.
🏺 So what IS the One Piece physically?
Oda confirmed it's a real, tangible object — not "the friends we made along the way." Here's what it likely contains:
The Rio Poneglyph — the complete, true history of the Void Century. This alone would destroy the World Government's legitimacy and wake the world up to what Imu actually is.
Knowledge of Uranus — the one Ancient Weapon we still don't fully understand. Pluton is under Wano. Poseidon is Shirahoshi. Uranus is presumably what's needed to actually break the Red Line. Joy Boy couldn't assemble all three in time. Roger couldn't either.
Joy Boy's apology and promise — we know from the Fish-Man Island arc that Joy Boy left a message of apology for not being able to fulfill his promise to the Mermaid Princess (the precursor to Shirahoshi/Poseidon). The promise was to use Poseidon's power to move Noah — to save Fish-Man Island when the Red Line falls and the ocean merges, destroying the island in the process. Noah was never a rescue vehicle. It was an ark for the aftermath of Ragnarök.
🌊 Why the name "One Piece" is the answer
Here's the thing that gets me. The world in One Piece is called the "Blue Sea" — but it's artificially divided into four: East Blue, West Blue, North Blue, South Blue.
Before Imu. Before the Red Line. Before the Void Century.
It was one ocean.
When the Red Line falls, those four seas reconnect. The Grand Line dissolves. Sanji gets the All Blue (all seas in one place — literally what happens when you remove the barriers). Laboon's family of Island Whales, who have been ramming the Red Line for decades out of some ancient instinct they can't explain, are finally freed. Fish-Man Island rises to the surface as prophesied.
The world becomes one piece again.
The treasure was never gold. The treasure is the answer to the world's suffering — and its name describes the state of the world after Luffy achieves it.
Oda hid the answer in the title for 28 years.
