We just moved into a new place and one of our neighbors apparently has such an issue with my parking that he already complained to our landlord and waited for me to come home tonight to tell me how to drive. I swear I park normally.

Advice Needed

We just moved into a new place a week ago. Within that week we received a vague email addressed to “dear resident” with a reminder about parking in the middle of the space. Because it was vague, we assumed it was a reminder sent to everyone and not just us. There’s also nothing in our lease about having to be centered in the spaces.

I don’t like driving to begin with, but I’m a good/safe driver. The spaces here are narrow so I sometimes have to adjust after pulling in, but I always make sure I’m within the lines and as straight as possible. Sure, maybe sometimes I’m a little off center. But when you compare my car to everyone else here, it’s genuinely average. There are many other cars in the lot that are off center or even parked on or even over the lines.

Tonight I realized that email must have been sent directly to us.

Our neighbor in the space to the left to us waited for me to come home at like 8:30pm, after dark. For context I’m a young woman in my 20s and he seemed to be around late 20s/early 30s. I drive an old Honda and his car is definitely newer and flashier than mine, so I guess maybe he cares a lot about it lol.

I pulled into the space and realized I was off center, so I had put my car in reverse just as I noticed him. I stopped to let him back into his space from across the lot. I was waiting for him to park and get out so I could adjust, but he just sat there and stared at me until I adjusted and got out.

He rolled down his window with some loud podcast playing and condescendingly complained to me about how I was sometimes too close to the line when I moved in. I said I was working on it. He then gave me unsolicited “neighborly” advice about backing into my space. I can back into spaces as needed, but I don’t have a rear camera and generally prefer just pulling in as it’s easier for me. I really wanted the conversation to end because it made me uncomfortable to be confronted by a strange man in the parking lot after dark, so I said I would work on it and scurried inside so fast that I forgot some stuff in my car.

Now I need to go get the stuff but I’m kind of scared to go back out if he’s still there. I don’t want to feel uncomfortable parking at my home.

My boyfriend wants us to write back to the landlord to describe this incident but I feel like now I’m second guessing myself and am half tempted to ask if they can just assign me a different space away from him.

What would you do?
