did I mess up?

Met this guy in school and got super close. A year later we went to a party and he poured out his feelings for me. I also kinda felt something for him too but didn’t see him long term and wasn’t that attracted to him. I tell him I don’t wanna lose the friendship. Then we stay friends and things are fine until a few months later, I found out he went on a date with another girl a week prior to the party and he was extremely upset about her ghosting him. This was hurtful bc it felt like everything he said to me was partial depth. I started stepping back a little from the friendship. Should I have brought it up to him even though I told him I don’t see him in that way?
