I grew up thinking saving money in a piggy bank was enough. Here's what nobody taught us about real money management.
Most of us Filipinos learned about money from our parents — and most of our parents learned from theirs. The lesson was always the same: "Mag-ipon ka." Save. That's it. No investing. No emergency fund strategy. No passive income. Just save.
Here's what I wish someone told me earlier:
1. Saving without investing is losing money. Inflation in the Philippines averages 4–6% annually. If your money sits in a regular savings account earning 0.10% interest, you're losing purchasing power every year.
2. Emergency fund first before anything else. 3–6 months of expenses. Liquid. Not in stocks. Not in crypto. Cash or high-yield savings like ING, Maya, or Tonik.
3. The goal isn't to be rich. The goal is to stop being financially fragile. Most Filipino families aren't poor because they don't work hard. They're financially fragile because one emergency wipes out everything.
Start there. Fix the foundation before you chase returns.
What's the worst financial advice you got growing up?
