Can I still play the game as a basement dweller?

Years ago, 7 Days felt perfect. I could, with effort and luck, build an underground base. During the night, this base would keep me mostly safe, and I would use that time for cooking and crafting. During the day, I hunted and mined and foraged. It was perfect.

Then, zombies started tunnelling and this sort of gameplay vanished. I've been away a long time. Is this sort of gameplay still possible in 7 Days? Or is there no way to create a sanctuary that withstand normal (non blood moon) night hordes?
