Taking cycle overseas

Just as the title says, I plan to take my cycle to India from USA.

I’ve been looking at bike bags and in that, some people recommended I just ask for a cardboard box in which new cycles arrive from a bike shop, put my cycle in it, protect it with foam and clothes and everything and check that in directly.

What are yalls thoughts on that? Or should I invest in a bike bag (I really don’t want to spend a lot because I’m a student)
